April 13, 2021 — The Department of Communications shares the following statement on the canonical case involving Father Eduard Perrone:
Close to two years ago, the Archdiocese of Detroit began a preliminary investigation under canon (church) law into allegations of sexual abuse of minors against Fr. Eduard Perrone. Following that review, the allegations were submitted to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), which has the sole authority in the Catholic Church to issue a determination in such cases. The CDF has informed the Archdiocese that – without ruling on the merits of the allegations against Fr. Perrone – it has decided not to proceed in this particular case. Therefore, no further action can be taken in this case under church law.
In its communication, the CDF acknowledged that due to Fr. Perrone’s purported actions during the investigation, the Archdiocese has the authority to address his conduct through the means available under the Code of Canon Law. As a result, a canonical disciplinary process has begun.
Fr. Perrone’s status remains unchanged: He is restricted from public ministry and presenting himself as a priest. He maintains the rights of defense and the presumption of innocence in all matters. As in all such cases, Fr. Perrone, 72, will continue to receive his full financial support and benefits during the canonical process.
To protect the good of all concerned, the Archdiocese will continue to limit any public comments on Fr. Perrone’s case until the canonical disciplinary process has been concluded.
